Since time immemorial men have been playing games for recreational purposes. The types of games played varied with times and civilizations however the goal has been the same that is to entertain .with the advent of technology its influence started to be seen in all walks of life which included the types of games played. So with the invention of television and computer a new generation of games came into being. These games were known as the video games. Video games popularity soared during the late eighties and now it competes equally with other universal games like football in popularity. Video games are of the following types depending on the type of controls and hardware used. They are
1. Pc based games: with the popularity of personal computer leap frogging to new heights they became the most popular platform for game play. The best thing about pc based games is that they are platform independent and can be played in different systems unlike consoles which can work only on there manufacturers platform. These games are played with the keyboard of the computer as the controlling device and the monitor as the display option. However other gaming controllers like joystick and wheels are also used. some of the best selling pc based games include the classic “wolfenstein” ,the all blood and gore” doom” and the simple but enchanting “supermario”. However the one disadvantage with computer base games is that you need to constantly update your computer in order to play the latest games available.
2. Consoles: consoles are those video games that require individual specific platforms to run on .for example a Microsoft console games would run only on Microsoft consoles and not on any other. Types of games normally used the television set to display. Although consoles were the first to bring the gaming marketing into existence however it suffered a slump during the 90s due to low quality games and lopsided marketing strategies. Another region for its downfall was the emergence of other personal computer

However consoles had its revival with the emergence of Nintendo entertainments systems by Nintendo it was soon followed by Microsoft corporations Xbox and sonny’s play station . the advent of these kinds of quality consoles gave the console gaming industry a major boost and the games soon gained lost ground. 3. Arcade games: arcade games came into existence in 1970 as one the favored past time in American bars and restaurants. These games are not portable and normally come in the form of huge machines. In order to play the player has to insert a coin and then read the instructions before playing the game .controls are normally in the form of levers attached to the machine. Arcade games often have very short levels, simple, easy to grasp controllers, iconic characters, and rapidly increasing difficulty. They are designed as quick bursts of adrenaline-fueled thrills, as opposed to most console games, which feature more in-depth gameplay, and stronger storylines.some of the most famous arcade games include mortal combat ,super Mario etc.
Pros and cons of the gaming industry:
Computer games have a negative impact on the development of children, especially contributing to aggressive and anti-social behavior. Playing computer games has a greater negative effect because it involves interactivity which impacts on learning processes of the child. Child’s. The Childs behavior is negatively influenced by the aggressive, violent nature of computer games. Furthermore, it is argued that playing computer games reduces ‘prosocial’ behavior and sensitivity in a children and so do in elder people. Video games are not completely evil, however. Many skills can be learned by playing them. Some such skills include problem-solving abilities, perseverance, pattern recognition, hypothesis testing, estimating skills, inductive skills, resource management, logistics, mapping, memory, quick thinking, and reasoned judgments .These video games permit the practice of skills that are often not incorporated into the school curriculum. They have also been seen to help build confidence in the ordinary child.
